Read about some of the ways BHB has helped the UD community!
Giving a grocery card to one of our regulars, she let me know that she is a young single mom trying to get her degree. She greatly appreciates all of the canned veggies and fruit, but was so excited to buy some fresh fruit for her young daughter to try. This hit me in the heart: I love giving my kids flavor adventures! The looks on their faces when they try a flavor for the first time is priceless. The grocery card allowed her the room to not just eat to sustain, but to have a fun and enriching experience with her daughter.
Last fall, a regular brought in his wife and young daughter to say goodbye and thank you. His family had leaned on the pantry several times to get through his degree, and now that he was graduating, he had gotten a great job in HI supervising environmental cleanups. This support enabled him to focus on his education, and he and his family were looking forward to a new life.
Another regular came in so excited this week. She let me know that with the grocery card she received, she was able to make a recipe that she had really wanted to try. She loves cooking, but often cannot afford the ingredients she needs. That $25 card got her the groceries that she wanted to have a feast of a dinner for her and her roommates; a luxury they hadn't enjoyed in a long time.
Hear from some of our students who work with Blue Hen Bounty!
“Through ECM group I learned about the prevalence of food insecurity especially among college students, which inspired me to get involved with BHB. I love being a part of this organization because of our dedication to the UD community and because of the sense of family among all of the club members and those who use the UD food pantry. ”
"I joined Blue Hen Bounty because I wanted a way to give back to the UD community. BHB has taught me the importance of helping others to have a healthy meal on their plate and erasing the stigmas of food insecurity."
